Default Black and White + first time in Critique

Hi everyone, this is my first post in Critique as well as on this forum. I have just recently started trying to convert photos to black and white. Any comments and or tips or greatly appreciated




Location: Glen Echo Park, Columbus, OH
Camera: Canon XTi Rebel 400d
Exposure Mode: Manual
Focal Length: 24mm
Exposure time: 1/60 sec
Aperture: f/9.0
ISO: 200
Flash: Not used
Exposure bias: 0.0
WB: Cloudy

Nice shot, I like the composition. I think the top is a little blown out though. It would be nice I think also if the rail in the foreground was a little brighter maybe. What are you using to convert to black and white.

I used the grayscale conversion within camera raw. I also notice how the top was a little blown out. To counter that I used the gradient tool within camera raw, and lowered it to about midway down the stairs.

Any suggestions on a different way to get rid of it be so blown out?

Wow I love the shot both in B&W and color. The black and white has more impact I think. I don't mind the overexposure at the top of the stairs though. I love all the lines in the shot. I can't think of a single thing to correct in it. Great job.

I like the colored one so much more... the B&W seems to me that the dark parts are too dark and the whites too white, so you loose a bit of detail... of course I'm very new to photography so take this more as a newbie's opinion

Thank you for your opinion. I will see what it looks like lightening up the darks, and darkening the lights.
