i took this shot at a place called Seaton in England with my Canon D400 and a 75-300mm lens overcast conditions and very wind.

First welcome to DPS,

I think your shot is lacking a few things. I would have loved to se something to show the relative size of the wave( rocks, surfer, swimer...). right now it looks a bit alone. The wave is also out of focus, i know it is hard to get right because it is constantly roling towards you. with that 70 300 did you use a tripod? It would help. Overcast days, if you dont have a fast lens is not the best for wave captures because you will never get a crisp image with the longer exposure required.

PS. you should post the EXIF files to help us help you more. and i hope i was not too hard on you.

thanks for advice, there was nothing to compre the wave to as it was a vast open beach and not suitable for water activities as such but point taken also as i only a 10 minute stop everything was a bit rushed and i would have used a tripod if i had it with me. thanks for all the pointers which i will use next time and no you were not too hard as i find criticism easy too take when i need to learn things and themore the better.
thanks
