I am not sure what you mean by wildly pretentious. But as far as a critique goes, I offer the following. I like the black and white because it goes with the industrial look and feel. It is a well exposed shot. But I am not sure what the subject matter is. If it simply a pattern shot, then I am not so wild about the composition. There seems to be too much going on. I suggest that you zoom in tight on one part of the shot, like maybe an insulator, or maybe one of the wooden beams. When you get into old industrial settings, there are so many cool shots to be had up close. Use a macro lens and really go exploring.

that was helpful, thank you
i think i tried to capture two aspects of the scene at once where two (or more) separate shots would have worked more effectively

Please be sure to get familiar with these! Posting your exif information plays a very important part in offering you a good critique. Also asking what you want help with is also very helpful
Would you mind returning and adding your exif information as well as a more specific question. Please and thank you!

I like the shot and agree that B/W was the right choice for this. I could see cropping it to simplify the composition, but I think it's an interesting picture the way it is. The one thing I notice - and I think this is quite minor, is that the sky seems to bleed through just a tiny little bit. But I'm nit-picking a very nice picture.
