Hm, what is that in the foreground? It's an interesting shape, but I'm spending my time wondering what it is! It's a good idea, but I'm just not sure what's up.
The lense flare is also a bit disracting -- I bet you could have gotten better colors, and less flare, if you'd taken this a little bit earlier. Those are just my initial thoughts. Keep it up!

I'm a novice too, so this is just my opinion. Although I agree it's good to have something in the forground, the line of the stair rail, or whatever it is, draws the eye to the right and out of the picture. It might work better if what's in the forground pointed directly toward the focal point of the picture, I would keep the same amount of space between the end of the stair rail and the sun. It if were closer it would not work as well.

I agree with the above.
Maybe head back and take 3 or 4 steps to the right next time you take the shot. Also try a faster shutter...just to minimise the sun "burning out" the whole picture and to make your foreground a little more silhoutted. Foreground is important, but it is not the focus. The sky and the colour is what is important. You still could have achieved a leading line without "defining" the walkway.

I would try getting closer to the see and use waves as the foreground. Look at my pic just to get an idea to focus on a sunset and its colors. However its best to get colors just after the sun has set. But you will need a tripod

Thanks for all the advice! Unfortunatly, I don't know when I will be able to go back to try this shot again. I live 8 hours away from NC, where this was taken! But all of your advice has helped me if I ever decided to get up and take pictures of another sunrise!
