Default B&W Conversion

Hi, and I know that I have posted a number of B&W conversions looking for feedback, but I want to make sure I am on the right track. I have been trying to extend the luminosity range, and for this conversion I was using the histogram in Lightroom 2 to make my adjustments. Is the range okay?

ISO 100/ 18mm/ f16/ 1/30 sec.
Gabriola 1 B&W

I would do a little burning in the clouds to give them more pizzaz and then the logs need to also stand out a bit more. they are kinda blending in with the sand. On a different layer try sharpening them up and do so me dodge and burn on them.
I like how the logs lead you intot he trees and then your eyes follow the trees to the horizon out to sea and then back around to the beginning.

Thanks for the feedback, windrider. I think you are right, but I do not have layers in Lightroom 2,, but I hope to get Photoshop soon so I may have to wait until then to play with this image a little more. Cheers.

you can burn in on lightroom many ways but try the adjustment brush. I use it all the time and it works great. .and if you don;t like it, go back on the history

nice shot

I keep forgetting that I can use the adjustment brush for stuff like dodging and burning. Thanks Dudley.

Also, don't just adjust the histogram nor the exposure/fill sliders....
Under the levels curve are 4 sliders which adjust the levels at different points than the other adjustments above. And as noted, there are tools for burning/dodging (generally use "brightness" and not "exposure", also make sure to set a decent feather edge to the brush). Before heavy editing with any program, it is better to create a new copy....

Oh yeah, you can also adjust the saturation/luminance of the different colors BEFORE converting to B/W to create greater dynamics in the conversion.

IMO, the dynamic range is too bright. You have very few dark tones, and I don't see a single true black tone. I would tone the entire thing down at least 1 stop, possibly 2, and use contrast and brightness to bring out the dynamic range you're looking for.

Just my humble opinion...
