Default Does framing and negative space work for this photo?

I was drawn to the arch of this building so didn't care much for the band in the background.

Please let me know if this photo works or I should have focused exclusively on the arch instead like someone else's photo instead:

gibberi3h, I would say that your photo is much more interesting than the other example.

However, the arch becomes less of the focus and I'm naturally interested in what's going on with the people in your shot. I also don't care much for the two bright lights at the top of the frame. I don't mind the negative space, but would suggest you shoot either further away or at a wider angle if your focus is the architecture and not the people.

What's the EXIF on this photo?

I like your image better but two things. I would straighten it. And the ther issue is that I end up split as to what your subject is. When I stand back and look at the photo unfocused I see the arch and the negative space as the focus and it works great. The forms are strong, I'm drawn into the the photo and then I hit the arch and there there's a little tiny spot light and small figures and it's a bit cluttered and I find myself disappointed.

You've created a great frame but the subject is hard to see and mixed up in a clutter of people and things. That being said that is the scene your viewing. And if there hadn't been quite as much clutter from the audience perhaps it wouldn't have mattered that the subject was so small. Boldness of the overall image clashes with the clutter of the scene.

To andrewlo13 and mogen_david:

Thanks for your feedback. I'm so going to retake this again by stepping back and trying out with b/w as well.

Good thing about the people is that they disappear after the band finishes.

My exif data is as shown:
  • isospeed = 100
  • shutterspeed = 1/8
  • exposuretime = 1/8
  • model = DMC-LX3
  • whitebalance = Auto

I think there is too much negative space...I agree that the subject gets confused.
Personally, I think the picture works better with most of the top half cropped off. then the foreground negative space causes you to look "into" the picture and your eye focuses on the singer as the subject. Then a little editing to increase the contrast in brightness between the singer/band and everything else to increase the draw/drama...

To sk66: Thanks for your comments. Will try that out if I want to focus on the band next time.

To LoveDSLR: Hmm I never thought of that. Thanks!

just don;t get the reason for the photo. can;t see the band so it is just a picture of an arch..crooked but just an arch. The band is the reason and if they were lit properly, the photo would have been much much better
Keep shooting. This can be quite crazy stuff
