My thoughts on this are that it is always better to put the subject to one side to draw your eye,but i think if the bird was further out it would give a sense of massive space and solitude.i know you want the bird to be close and clear but a little further out would incorperate the lake and mountains.I am no expert and this is only my opinion.A very nice shot all the same

Nice job on the second crop... I think it does a nice job of allowing the viewer to focus on the swan while retaining the size & scope of the surrounding landscape. My only change would be to now boost the contrast using curves in the moutains and sky... this should remove some of the "flatness & haze" there.
