Point I was attempting to make is that you should try to utilize every space within the frame as a painter would do. I don't feel the negative space at the bottom is doing anything for the composition.
The canvas comment, simply suggesting you consider yourself a painter creating a masterpiece. What you see thru your viewfinder is your painting, now compose it into a masterpiece.
Let the camera be your brush and the light be your paint...

Beautiful image, the sunset is bewitchingly awesome.

Composition-wise, I would have followed the rule of third here. 1/3 of the image would be the silhouetted mountains and 2/3rd would be the sunset and that lovely sky.

I would also explore with keeping the sun on the lower third line at the intersection points and checked how it looks.

I agree with idcrewdawg on his comment. The black nothing in the foreground takes alot from the photo, I'd want to include the sky more on this shot since you have really awesome tones and colors going there.

I remember my teacher back in workshops to always try out thirds before going creative on taking shots.
To this I'd suggest... thirds, thirds, thirds.
