Do the branches hurt or help this shot? Also, don't be shy if you notice anything else.

I don't think they help the shot at all because they are not in focus. If they were, I think they would frame the image nicely.

I agree ... the photo would be better if the branches were in focus. So many objects in the foreground seem a little distracting to me but I like the photo overall.

I think the branches serve two purposes.
They provide contrast between nature and man made structures and it gives the viewer a sense that the photographer was in the woods peering towards the city. Perhaps as a wild animals view from their peaceful woodland home wondering how long will it be until man begins to take their land away for urban sprawl.

I concur. It could be interpreted as some narrative on urban sprawl etc.
