Hi there deejc and welcome to DPS.
I'm rather exhausted at the moment so please forgive me if my critique is rather short. Now opinions are going to very but I think everything to the right of the building needs cropped out. It is the brightest spot in the frame thus it pulls the eye away from the awesome lines within the center of the scene. The two red light/dots are extremely distracting to me. Now the cross in the middle is really nice. I assume this was the inteneded subject? If so, I feel the horizonal line near the center of the frame is leading the eye away and towards the end of the building. I would suggest going back and placing the cross near the right side of the frame and let that line I spoke of lead the eye to it. Once again forgive me for I'm really beat so my critique might not be the best ,but a newbie and everyone else deserves to be recognized and appreciated for the time and effort they put into a shot.

deejc -
Welcome! Here's my take, for what it's worth: this shot is too "in between". Not abstract, because we can see the sidewalk, buildings, etc., and not a satisfying cityscape (at least to me) due to the confusing perspective (it took me a little while to get my bearings while looking at this photo). The other shots on your flick (when the wall is red, green, etc) do a much nicer job of being cityscapes. I like those. If you want to make this shot more abstract, and if you're in the mood to re-shoot, maybe try different perspectives with just the wall and the cross? I'd imagine with such a cool subject, there'd be a few ways to compose some nice close ups of that wall. Hope that makes sense. |

Welcome to the joys of photography - and to the world of varying perceptions!
You have already begun to think creatively and this is by no means a snapshot. What was it about the shot that you really wanted to capture? Does the shot manage to demonstrate that? The lines are very interesting and,as mentioned above, cropping the gap and other building out may add impact to the shot. Once cropped, try applying the rule of thirds to the main part of your subject - I suspect the cross will be rather too central for best effect without further cropping. The central horizontal line is, for me, the strongest as it takes your eye towards the natural vanishing point. V http://www.flickr.com/photos/26816965@N02/ |

Your flickr set are interesting, good photos and you have an eye for different angles and unusual details, which I like. I think the pic you have selected for critique here is interesting and I like it, but taking on board some of the other comments you have, it probably works best as part of that set rather than as a stand-alone picture. The crop makes it more abstract, and also makes it work better as a stand-alone picture, but I rather like the two points of interest in the original, the detail of the cross and the oof bg placing it in the city. Keep posting, I like your work and I'd enjoy seeing more of it!

Thanks for all your comments, Its made me look at again in more ways than one!
i still like the original shot as i think it keeps in with the cityscape theme showing teh alley way etc but i also see the flip side and making it more abstract. Again, Thanks for all your comments i really appreciate it and it will help me going forward and looking at shots in different angles. |

I am a big fan of highly geometric (even abstract) shots, and yours is very close to that!I was about to edit it when I saw what RoyL did, which is close to what I would do. Some more straightening or slight perspective correction (to align the cross right down the middle of the frame, balanced on both sides) might make for a very bold composition.
But as always -- YOU know what YOU like, and if you know that, go right ahead and ignore me!
