Sorry to burst your bubble but unfortunately (or fortunately, depends on your point of view) a better camera will not make you a better photographer. I doubt even using a D3 would improve this shot much from where it is if you did the same things.

If you are struggling to see how to improve this shot then I recomend learning about the histogram on your camera (P&S or DSLR, it works the same) as this will help you identify the over exposure. This link is a good one for histograms.

The horizon thing isn't really a rule as in "the rule of thirds". Its just somehting that is the case. Look out of the window and you will see straight horizons. An image with a slanted horizon is very awkward to look at and therefore should be corrected in a landscape shot like this.

Toltecuk mentioned that maybe the land is slanted but unfortuantely that can't be true when you have water in your shot. Water on a hill would flow down it!!!

Great image. A beautiful setting that was very well composed.

On the over-exposure:
In general I under-expose by one level on all my shots as its easier to brighten pics digitally than to recover lost details because of over-exposure.

A useful tool when you are starting out or you really have to capture the moment is AEB (Auto exposure bracketing) where the camera is set to automatically take 3 shots - one at your specified exposure and then one one-level-up and one one-level-down. Most DSLRs have this feature. If yours doesnt, do it manually just to make sure.

Some ideas. Hopefully of some use.

Tom

Wow, I'm doing a lot of disagreeing with people on this thread but I'm about to do it again.

The experts would state that under exposing your image is not the way to go as you will introduce a lot of noise when you increase the exposure in the RAW converter. What you should actually be doing is exposing to the right, i.e over exposure, but without blowing out your highlights.

See here for an explantion as to why as its far to complex for me to explain.
