underexposed Andes?

Went to Argentina last month, and drove through the Andes which were amazing!

I really enjoy taking photos as a hobby, and I hear that I have a good eye... now, I'm trying to get the technique figured out..... trying to move away from using the set modes (landscape, etc.) on my Canon Rebel XTI and onto manually setting the shutter, aperture, etc. I think a great way to move onto this is to visually compare photos and their associated F-stops, shutter speed.

If this photo of the Andes underexposed? I think it is a good photo, but I also keep thinking that something just isn't right about it..... hmmmm....

Dont look underexposed to me. Looks just about right, actually. The colours are a bit muted, but thats because of the cloud cover. I think you should either increase or decrease the saturation, to get a specific look.

You should be able to do a curves adjustment to the sky and the land seperately, assuming you are using software that supports layers and curves which most do.

Create a layer for the sky, one for the land, and then adjust each seperately. Adjust the land first, there is enough detail in the image without you having to make multiple exposures, just adjust contrast, then to make the land pop just tweak the saturation. Do the same with the sky. Another trick I use is to create a base layer behind the adjusted layers which hide imperfections due to the selection adjustments.

I have tried to have a go but it looks like you have already tried to do some work patching the clouds, either that or it is a jpeg problem. I can adjust the land perfectly but end up with 2 patches near the center V of the land.

Nice shot. Someone else commented that the image was not underexposed, Yes it is, but in a good way.
