Default How could I have made this exposure better?

Southwestern Sky

Camera: Canon EOS 40D
Exposure: 3.2 sec (16/5)
Aperture: f/1.4
Focal Length: 50 mm
ISO Speed: 100
Exposure Bias: 0 EV

The moon and the planets are over exposed. How can I make it so they are not this way? Any suggestions would be most appreciated!

I love it. I think it captures the sky beautifully!

You could always play with it post in photoshop and learn what adjustments you made that you liked and try to compensate in your next shoot.

That said, I wouldn't change a thing. I think the colors are warm and inviting making you wish you were there for the real thing.

I am in no way an expert but I just finished reading this post a short while ago and thought it might apply here: Blue Moon

I'm thinking that you'd might have to do this "HDR" thing I keep hearing about "High Dynamic Range" in order to get the full spectrum you are after.

Others might have better advice, but what I've found for this is you usually have to take two exposures, one for the moon, one for the surrounding area, and then photoshop the two together (i.e. placing the properly exposed moon onto the properly exposed background). I'm sure there are other techniques but there's one!

Lovely image, btw.

Thank you. I wish I could get the moon and planets exposed properly. Like it looks with the naked eye. There was another post that had an interesting suggestion that I think I will try. That is take two exposures and use photoshop to combine them into one.
