Default Snow scene

I just started shooting a couple of days ago, I still can't get the lighting right, would appreciate if you people can point out my mistakes.

Camera : Canon SX110IS
f/2.8
1/20 seconds
ISO 400
Exp. Bias : 0
No tripod

My other photos from the same day :

I've edited them a little in picasa to make them a little brighter

Looks like an example of where your camera's auto exposure settings can be quite easily become fooled. Without getting to technical your camera is trying to expose a scene so that it is an average brightness of 18% grey, as most scenes normally average out like this. However as snow is so white and bright as snow scene will be a lot brighter than this average 18% grey. You need to tell the camera this, the easiest way is to use exposure compensation to increase the exposure and make the scene brighter. This should ensure the snow is white not grey.

I agree that the snow appears a bit grey and thus the whole capture seems a bit dark.
However I must say there is a nice sense of balance with the top windows of each building on the sides. Nice job with that.
There is something pertruding on the bottom right that is a bit distracting but if this had been cropped out you would have lost the building to the right thus off-setting the balance.
Thanks for sharing and hearing me babble...

Thanks for the compliments Tom, as I wrote in my previous mail, I have just started shooting a month or so ago. So your critiques help a lot.

I guess the overall light in the scene was less, I was in full manual mode and the aperture was set at 2.8 which is the max. that my camera allows and the shutter speed was 1/20 sec after which shakes become problem for me. So I guess this is the best I can get unless you people can suggest something different.
