    Default Fish Demonstrator's Beware!

Ok, I would like some critique on this shot predominately on composition.
I took it for obvious reasons, namely what is printed on the sign, but didn't want it to be a photo of a just a sign.

    HI Jdflute,

I like this images, it is simple and nicely balanced. I think that the main subject is in the right place and is balanced nicely by the shadow creating an invisible diagonal line. I would probably have a go at cloning out the wire and the little blue sign to see if it improve it - it may not, but it's worth a try. I would also straighten up the bottom of the wall on the left. ..

If the sign is the subject then I would tighten the crop. Pull it in to removed the cable at the top and the dirty road just barely on the bottom. For some character I would probably try to keep most of the shadow, but would want to play around a little. Right now there is too much else to distract the eye that the sign, and the words on the sign aren't what registers; at least not to me.

For me that really works. It could be tighter but. Don't crop anything out, on the other hand look into the history of photo criticism & realise why it works. The wall textures could be accentuated though?

My main issue is the two elements are of ~ equal weight and at ~ equally strong positions in the image.

I took a little time to mess with it and this is what I came up with.

I agree that the wire and blue plaque should be removed. However, the road should be left in to "anchor" the pole to the ground. Steve's crop to one side is quite pleasing and creates just enough tension due to the slight off centre cropping. The blue plaque is gone too, although I don't know why the wire is still there

I thought your original image was pretty good. Having looked at it a few times I think the composition mistake you made was not including the bit where the post & shadow joined.
One thing that I hope you'll keep in mind is that putting your images up for crit on a website like this could compromise your vision. I thought that although your picture showed a sense of humour it also had a level of social commentary?
If you've got something to say then stick with it. I really like this website & appreciate the crits I get but if it were a music criticism site we'd probably have no Rolling Stones or Sex Pistols?
    Stick to your guns...
