Default Keys to the Horizon

I took this on a day trip to Key West. I used Lightroom to create a little more contrast.

There are two main things I would do with this shot. First, I would straighten the horizon. Then I would crop it (maybe 16:9) to remove some of the water.

You are missing a subject. A scene look very dull without a subject...

Something a bit more like this:

Untitled-1

What I've done is crop in a bit too, as well as straighten the horizon. I also increased the saturation and warmth a bit to bring out those sunset colours, and added a gradient filter to lighten the bottom a little so that the ships' silhouettes were more pronounced.

In the future what I would do is try to get the ship to create more of a subject as vainqueur mentioned. However, you may be able to crop down to get the ships as more of the subject.
