Default Choice of focus

I took this at a local creek yesterday and deliberately focussed on the tree more in less in foreground. On processing I wondered if I would have been better focussing further back, say on the dead looking tree? Advice and opinions welcomed thanks.

Unless you're going for a particular effect, you generally want to make sure your foreground is in focus, so that part of the photo is fine.

What were you intending the viewer to see or look at when he looks at this photo? For me, at least, there isn't a real subject.

At F16 would it matter which you chose?

Okay thanks - on reflection I think it would look odd if the foreground were out of focus.

I was hoping to show the track as leading into the bush - it's a special place for me I suppose, and wanted to try capture some of that.

One way to emphasize the track is to have it stand out by darkening the rest of the elements in the picture.

I hope you don't mind my attempt at editing.

Thanks you! That looks so much better and conveys what I was trying to :-) Thanks for your time to show me this.
