So i took this shot 2.5 years ago. LOVED it then, kinda so so on it now.... but alot of fam and friends LOVE this shot so I wanted opinions... I like the colors, i tried to get some foreground, and a broad focus depth. But now that i have more experience, im not sure the composition does much for me.... all comments welcom but mostly looking at what i could have done differently from a composition standpoint, knowing i only have maybe 10 feet left or right i could have moved, no closer....

I think both the tree from above and the foreground from below are kind of distracting really. The rough rocks and the foaming sea are much more interesting to look at. Maybe you could have crouched down a bit and zoomed in slightly to get rid of both distractions and just give the rocks as the foreground looking out further to the sea.

I like the scene and colors of the rocks. I don't think the branch used to frame the shot is helping much, but I don't know that it's hurting the image either. The horizon needs to be straightened. Although I like the rocks, I think the shot could use more of a focal point. Right now, my eye doesn't know where to settle. If you were able to capture a large wave splashing against the rocks, that would give my eye something to settle on.

Knew about the horizon, but good catch, i was focusing on foreground and framing, and i loved it at first, but as stated now it is kinda MEH to me, keep it coming, im gonna have about a post a day for the forseable future, i can take it!

Generally I like the shot except for the horizon. It just has enough elements as mentioned above that fight against each other that keep it from being better.
It doesn't look like the sea is capable of producing a large wave so what you have to do is take advantage of what you have to work with. For me the meandering line of the rocks, the action of the sea, and the various colors of the sea are the elements to work with. I am a fan of extended exposure where the sea takes on a velvety look. Of course this takes the addition of a neutral density filter or two polarizing filters to work together. Even without this technique, focusing in on the line of the rocks and sea would have been a different approach. I am still fairly satisfied with it as it is. |

This is what I would have done with it...

I'll be checking my horizons, thanks for the recrop, i think thats pretty good and If i had it to do over again i'd prolly be closer to that. IIRC all i had was 18-55 kit lense so i may have been @ 55mm, not i have a 18-105 and 35mm f/1.8 so my options will open up some.
