Smile Paphos Cyprus

Hi to you all,
this is my first thread and being relatively new to the landscape photography i would really appreciate your comments. I was in Paphos for the long weekend and decided to take a stroll on the beach and take some pics. No photoshop or any software has touched the pic hence my buddy showing up on the left.

Basicalyl i am trying to figure out what settings are best for what situations and if anyone can point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated.

My gear:
Canon EOS Rebel T3i with 18-135mm IS lense
Hoya UV filter
No tripod was used.

Picture Details:
F-Stop: f/3.5
Exposure time: 1/50 second
ISO-Speed: ISO-100
Exposure Bias: 0
Focal Length: 18mm
Metering Mode: pattern
Flash mode: No flash, compulsary
exposure program: aperture priority
white balance: manual

Welcome to DPS. I think you have a decent shot, but it could use some tweaks. First of all, you need to either crop or clone out the person on the left. I like the idea of using the steps to lead the eye into the image, but the closed gate kind of blocks the flow. Was it possible to open the gate? Lastly, I don't know why you used f/3.5 when most lenses are sharpest around f/8 and you'll get more DOF at f/8 or f/11. It also looks like your image could use some sharpening (digital images are soft by nature and require sharpening), or you need to work on your camera holding technique. If you're right handed, your left hand should be curled under your lens.

If you plan to get serious about this, you'll need to get a good tripod.

thanks for the info regarding the f-stop. I have definately learnt something new today.

Also regarding the gate, it was locked with a padlock and so i couldnt have it opened.

Thanks and take care,
