I've been driving by this site for years and finally took the time to grab a picture today. I think I have an idea of how it could be better, but I would like some critique on composition and any other items that would help. Thanks for looking!

Thanks for taking the time to post and asking a specific question. You can get better feedback if you folow the Critique Forum Rules

The general composition is good for me without that telephone pole being a distractor. I don't see much for shadows so it looks like you took this in the middle of the day. Go on back there during the golden/blue hours. A step or two to camera left to be in the center of the tracks to use them as leading lines into the factory. Try differing levels, mostly lower. That and differing time of day may make a large difference.

Thanks! You're right about the telephone pole, as I was editing that was all I could see. I was probably about an hour too early for the good light, but it's also one of those places you don't want to be alone to late in the day. It's really too bad that the job that pays always gets in the way of the passion that doesn't!

The telephone pole bothers me also. Instead of going left I probably would have moved to the right and tried a slightly higher angle. More of a squared on approach is how I picture it.

There are also areas that would be good zoomed in on and done by themselves. The whole area at the top with the salvation army sign could be good. A study of the windows might work. Lots of potential here.

This is the type of place that always makes me want to explore inside and look for the stories of past glory.
