A nice photo. With just a tiny bit of moving, I think you could have used the branches in the foreground to frame the subject a little more, and not have them impinge onto the tree/subject. Nice sky and colors. Reminds me of a water color.

I agree with the moving a bit camera left to better frame the subject.

Try differing crops moving the subject up, down, left, right just off dead center of frame and see if you like that more. Others may point out your horizon is tilted, but with shots like this I don't pay much attention.

Not bad for a first time out. If you are out taking shots in controlled situations like this one, try http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j...u-PKDpAdzfk-RQ "bracketing" your shots.

Nice shot. The horizon isn't quite level and that's pretty noticeable in these type of shots. I agree that the branches framing the top of the shot are too much. I think less of the branches, or none of them would be better, IMO. Also, unless you have a super-compelling subject, it's usually not recommended to center your subject. I'd say you're off to a good start, though.

Try nice there with the branches as frames, not sure if you intended that or not but nice try with it. Like many here have mentioned, always make sure your horizon is parallel with the scene. Another thing you might want to take note is the mood of shot. Most people I assume like this kind of scene to be cold and cosy.

thanks guys, i was trying to use the branches as a frame and this is the first time ive tried that, so i will take your comments on board next time, the horizon i could not get quite stright as it was on a hill with a river behind me so i was struggling a bit. thanks for the comments and i will post my next shots.

Your editing software should have a tool to adjust the plane or the horizion. Maybe it is where you set your crop.

I agree about moving the tree to the left... it would have been framed better by the foreground framing... despite that I think it's a beautiful picture well done

I see you mention that you have Picasa. Straightening photos is very easy in Picasa, its the program I use for minor adjustments.
One suggestion I'd make, composition wise, is to try dropping to one knee and taking the photo from lower to the ground. At the moment you have the bog-standard, just standing there, push the button view. Taking the photo from a different angle may add some more interest to the shot, you may also have gotten some more of those interesting coloured clouds off to the left as well.
