Default Old Army post....

Hello everyone! I am just starting to learn the technical aspects of taking better photographs so I would appreciate some help. This is a picture I took of old post up here at Fort Drum. The only changes I made were to crop the photograph a little and make it black and white. It was nice in color, but I feel that it has a little more dramatic look in black and white. I would appreciate any constructive criticism you can offer to help me make this better/take better shots. Thanks!!

I like the composition. I think it might be a little over exposed. You could darken it a bit.

I agree about it possibly being overexposed so I had a quick (and awfully rough) go at editing in PS, nothing special I know, and not really an improvement either, but just an idea I had that I felt might improve the shot and give it a little extra drama.

The technical aspects of the photo are as follows: focal length 42.0 mm, 1/500s f/11.0 and ISO 100. How do I take that shot so it isn't overexposed? I agree that darkening it makes it look a little bit better that was why I made it black and white. I shoot with a Nikon D5100 with a Tamron 18-200 lens. I had it set on P but the ISO was on auto and I had it set for direct sunlight. What would have been a better way to take this shot?

Actually for a single shot it's not too bad. If shot in RAW a little post work will liven this right up... (BTW, do not strip the exif from the images and make sure they are sRGB...they look like crap on a MAC otherwise)

Shadow/Highlight and curves adjustment in PS.
