Hello all,
This is my first post. Just looking for some feedback on a couple of photos that I took on a recent holiday. Not sure if they are 'arty' or just point and shoot like anyone with a camera can do. Not looking for an ego inflation just curious to see i they are anything special. The first one is a shot on a moving boat in Paris = no tripod! The second is fog over Loch Ness in Scotland. They are taken on my Sony digital compact. Ps sorry if adding them as an attachment is annoying, I'll figure out the URL thing later. Thanks Last edited by windrider86; 01-02-2012 at 01:41 PM. |

Welcome to DPS and thanks for sharing some of your holiday shots with us. Unfortunately, the first one is a little soft, but not bad considering shot from a moving boat. I really like the second one, it has a very nice feel to it. Good job!

I think the term "art" is very subjective and simply a matter of how you present yourself. Just yesterday I was driving down the coast with my wife and drove past a small shop selling "fine art" photographs. One of the prominent photos in the window was a black and white print of a gumball machine sitting on the floor. I turned and asked my wife, that's fine art? IMO some of the amateur photos I've taken look a heck of a lot more like fine art to me than a gumball machine. So, I wouldn't worry too much about what someone thinks in terms of it being art. Focus more on your vision, what you want to capture, and how you can go about capturing it.
This is a very beautiful photograph that I think can be improved a bit with some patience and a tripod. It looks like this was shot around twilight after the sun set? The sky in this shot offered perfect conditions the lights reflecting on the water are nice. If you could have set up a tripod on the side of the Seine and opened up your tripod a bit longer, you'd get better sharpness in the Eiffel Tower and the water would look more creamy and blurred. If you were to go for a larger depth of field (f/13-f/16), the lamp posts would look like stars, which would help add an artistic feel to it. Now of course you were on a boat so that opportunity didn't exactly present itself to you. My suggestions are simply for future reference if you find an opportunity such as this again.

Sorry Windrider, I didn't read the rules last night! Won't do it again.
Thanks for the comments, if I'm lucky enough to find myself back in Paris I'll take in your suggestions. Wish I could have bought my tripod with me but I was on a bus tour so no time and no room! |
