Other than your choice of subject , I kind of like the pictures. I think if you had a picture that was like #1 but included the river like #2, it would be a better picture. I kind of like the off center look of the first one and the inclusion of the wall.

Thanks, and thanks to everyone for talking me through what you're thinking when you saw the photo. One of my biggest challenges in terms of composition is figuring out what elements of the photo are going to catch people's eyes. I think I'm getting better at recognizing this stuff in a photo when I sit and look at it, but I'm still not too swift when it comes to composing "live".

I shot a handful of images here because I figured the portal would make an interesting frame for the shot, but I really didn't consider enough of the elements inside the frame to get all those details right, too. The feedback on this photo has been really helpful, though -- hopefully, some of it will sink in. ;-)
