Default Exposure Problem

Hi guys,

The sky in this picture is obviously overexposed. This was intentional as I was trying to put more emphasis on the boat and the details of the boat. Is this line of thought valid? what are your own thoughts about the exposure of this picture?
Thank you kindly for your feedback.

Camera: Canon 60D
Shutter speed 1/400
ISO:100
Ap:5.0
Focus: Auto
Flash: OFF:
White Balance: Auto. Having said that I did ply with the levels to make the blue colour of the boat pop out. Other than that post processing was minimal.

I'm digging the composition. I also like the choice of f5 to help bring the boat out.

How about cropping from the top to just over the roofline of the shed in the BG? The bit of overexposed water between the tree and the shed draws my eyes away from the boat also. Can you adjust the "lights/highlights"? That might help the sky also.

Thanks I will try that tonight and post the result. I am fairly new to this art. I kept the sky to try and respect the rule of thirds. My thought was to try and improve my exposure technique before using post processing software

Thanks again for your feedback. I would be delighted for your feedback on the pictures on my blog... there aren't many dont worry

Do you mean intentional as in you had to make a compromise not to under-expose the boat, or intentional as in you actually wanted to 'white out' the sky?...

I like the composition, I like the colours. There seems to be a little distortion/?chromic abheration around the shed, but that might just be how its displaying.

If it was me, and I had shot in RAW, I would try and get some detail out of the whiteout sky. If I was shooting it again, I would shoot bracket exposure compensation so that I had 2 shots either side of my chosen exposure to play with in photoshop. This works best with a tripod, although there is minimal difference if hand-held.

I do wonder if a straightforward graduated ND filter would have helped, but probably difficult as you would clip the top of the boat with it as well.

I suppose what I am getting at is that I dont like the whiteout sky. Something slightly moody (but not overdone) might improve things (to my tastes)

Thanks Doctorjames ya I didn't want to underexpose the boat. I didn't really care about the sky since it would be out of focus anyway with f 5.
I am not good with photoshop yet... in fact I do not have it. I guess I have a lot to learn still
Thanks for your feedback

If you want, and are willing to let me have the original (hopefully in RAW if you shot that way) I will show you what it can do... and what i meant

I don't have the RAW file. I am fairly new to this so I didn't know the importance of a RAW file back then.
