Default A subjective question....

Hello everyone,

I seem to ask for only highly subjective things lately.

I called this photo "Frost & Silence" because those are the two words that first come to my mind when I see it. I can also remember being there, very cold and creepy silent.

When you look at this photo, does it make you feel at ease do you feel it's unbalanced - unsettling?

I know it's a bit unusual question but I'm wondering what other feel about it.

Exif:

Nikon 18-105mm @ 50mm

ISO 100

Frost & Silence

Feels like solitude. A cold frigid solitude like being lost in the forest and you just wish you could find a cottage with a warm fire and hot chocolate.

I do however like this photo no matter how much I hate the cold.

I'd like to see more of the background int he frame. Reason I say that is the branches from the front tree appear to be pointing at something but yet they are so close to the edge of the frame there isnt anything to see

I like how the frosted tips of the branches are echoed by the trees in the background, but the image does feel a little unbalanced to me. Maybe Windrider said it best. Perhaps the tree/branches in the foreground are a little too dominant? Maybe reduce the number of green branches? I wish I could articulate it better.

This^

I would have also shot this horizontal with the same branches image right to about 1/3 total frame width. Kinda the rule of 3rds style.

The name is fine though...

The first thing I felt was serenity. I like the shot but must agree with others. A wee bit more of negative space at camera left to include more of the frosted deciduous trees?

If not having part of the tree on the right, maybe the whole tree? It does leave one to wonder what's missing.

Thank you everyone!

I have already experimented with different crops, the original has a bit more "image data" on the left side, just as you suggested. My original intention was to see how it makes you feel, ie. what do you think about it (I was already pretty set on the crop), but now I am going to make another version and compare them.

I have the same feeling when looking at it, if feels somewhat unbalanced, but not symmetrically unbalanced, more like the ratio of visual mass of the subject and the background is unbalanced. My intention while shooting it was to create a very calm and soothing image which would show the beauty of frosted nature. I guess I wasn't very successful in balancing it. OK, going back to post work now! Thanks once again!

At risk of stating the obvious (see my earlier posts ;-), is it not a given that we read the image from left to right? You could flip it?

IMO it IS stronger flipped.
