Default First try.

Hello,

My first try at a landscape with a little PP, color saturation, in Gimp. I picked what I thought was the best of several variations on PP. Shot with a Canon 600D, Sigma 18-200 OS. Please have at it. Thanks.

Thanks for looking.

Welcome to DPS. You're shooting at the right time of day and you have a nice scene there. I just think it lacks a subject or focal point, like a boat in the water. Having some sunset clouds in the background always helps, too.

I like this pic except I think that if that tree line was a little brighter so we could see a little more detail there, it would be better. In fact, now that I look at it again, I think the whole lower two thirds of this pic could use some lightening.

Thanks for your recommendations, I'll use them to improve my work. I'm still learning the mechanics of the dslr as well as composing an interesting picture. I'll have to try lightening the foreground and see how that looks.

If you shoot in the middle of the day, you will be constantly battling the dynamic range issue. Your eye can see about 20 stops of light while your camera only sees about 9. That's why your sky is bright, but there are dark areas with little detail. So, shooting in the golden hours is recommended because the light is softer and there is less dynamic range to deal with. Exposure blending, graduated neutral density filters and HDR are all ways to help overcome the dynamic range issue.
