Default Solitary Fishing

I was out on a pier as sundown was approaching and saw this fisherman all by himself. The sky was just beginning to show some signs of color, and a bit of haze. Photo was taken handheld - I very rarely use a tripod.

The RAW file was brought into Photoshop for some minor adjustments in contrast, saturation and sharpness, and much of the water at the bottom was cropped out.

I would like to hear your thoughts on composition/cropping and/or exposure/contrast/saturation.

All thoughts appreciated.

There are more shots in this set, and if you care to, you can see them on my photo blog, and comment/critique them there as well. It is always appreciated.

I think your comp would be a lot better if that pier would start in the lower right corner instead of being straight across the frame.

As for the lighting, I think this is too bright to really show some good color. The use of a sunset filter would have done that for you. As it is, you could try making a new layer and using the multiply filter and adjusting the opacity until you get a decent lighting effect.

Yeah, the lone fisherman is almost an afterthought, like they're really not the focus of this image.

In landscape photography, when you shoot is more important than where you shoot.

So what would your suggestion(s) be?

I would suggest getting a closer zoom on the fisherman, and placing him in the bottom right third of the picture, looking out over the vastness of the ocean. From this point if you flip the shot so he is in the bottom left it becomes a more pleasing composition. Although this would require retaking the shot which is probably not going to happen. I really like the colours in this, very pastel-y
