You have to get a tripod for shots like this. When you have one, you won't have to shoot at ISO 400 and f/3.5. Most lenses are sharpest around f/8 and you'll get more DOF with a smaller aperture. I would start shooting landscapes at f/8 or f/11 and ISO 100. Let the shutter speed vary.
A graduated ND filter would be nice too, just don't get a Cokin one. I would recommend a 3 stop filter if you get one. You could also bracket your shots, so you can take one image for the sky and one for the foreground and blend the exposures to get the best of both. In this case, that would have allowed you to get some detail in the foreground. I really like the colors in the sky and would prefer to see this in landscape mode. As navcom said, portrait mode often feels too confining.

I actually tried a few in landscape mode, but didn't like them as much. Here is one:
Ok you have definitely inspired me to get a tripod. I hate carrying things around so I've been worried that if I buy one, I'll never have it with me when I need it. But I suppose that is just going to have to be something I get over. |

I like the landscape shot as much as the portrait one. I would like to see more detail in the foreground.
A tripod is a pain to carry around at times, but there is no substitute for one. I thought about getting a gorilla pod, but it really restricts where you can place your camera. I've seen others recommend UFRaw for a free RAW editing program. I'm still using the Canon program. UFRaw | GIMP Plugin Registry

@travelpat: I am in Asia (Indonesia) and I have thought about that method to get it. But I kind of like the idea of something I can update when I return to the states.
@Krusty: Part of what I didn't like about the landscape was the lack of foreground detail. I tried UFRaw, but for some reason it doesn't work for me. The photos were opening with weird colors and crops. |

As an aside does it work in PS CS2? I haven't had much luck so far. thanks. Sorry to hijack the tread, and hope it doesn't hijack the thread.
