Painting Marina Bay Sand

This shot was by chance, I was sitting at the newly constructed The Promontory @ Marina Waterfront enjoying the cool breeze when I turned around and saw a clean composition of the Marina Bay Sand. Set up the tripod and did about 7 shots and HDR it.

Aperture - f/11.0
Focal Length - 9 mm
ISO Speed - 100

And what are your questions?

Why did you choose to do a HDR here? The scene looks like a single exposure would have covered it well, too.

You can't. I tried but end up either than water too dark or the sky overexposed.

Anyway, I just wanted to ask about the composition as this photo was taken due to the clean background. Just want to see if a clean composition like this is likeable or not.
