I think your composition is fine, the wooden posts (starting with the small one) lead my eye nicely up to the boat, with clouds as a nice background. I would just like to see it in full colour version, maybe even a bit more saturated than normal. I think this monochrome treatment doesn't do it justice. Also, the horizon is leaning slightly to the right.

I was going to say that the poles in the foreground don't look really sharp, but when I click it to view the Flickr version, it does look sharp. Not sure why.

The foreground poles attract my eye, but my eye wants to stay there. It looks like you wanted to lead the viewer's eye towards the boat, but since the boat is so small, flat and does not have any contrasting color, it does not hold my attention.

You seem to be going for more of a monotone look, but if you took the shot later and had some sunset colors in the background clouds, it would create more visual interest and help lead my eye into the image, IMO.

Jamie I like the image, but after playing with it in PS I added a curves layer to bring back some of the contrast. If you look at the histogram it's basically all midtones. Was that a look you were going for? I also did a bit of a crop to eliminate the pilings on the right side of the image, and cloned out the rest that could not be cropped out, and wound up with a nice straight line of the remaining pilings leading your eye back to the boat. I'll post it if you want to see it

Thanks for the comments, I tend to snap - by that I mean there is little time for the shot (the boat was actually going past in that pic). I think the horizon appears unlevel due to the dark spot on the right - would fix the horizon so it *looked* correct or so that it *was* correct?

The duller/low saturation is on purpose - I have a think for it at the moment :P I see what you mean having your focus fixed on that first stump, I'll have a play, clone out some things and see what happens. I rarely us PS, all my PP is one in LR - perhaps I should give it a go :P - Thanks

I did give the rules a look over, the thing is, I'm after general feedback. I don't have questions like "how do you do XYZ" and if there's a problem, it's pointless asking as I already know :P For me, it's a case of seeing what other people think is wrong and getting their perspective.

Perhaps my shots for feedback would be better suited in SYS?

PS: Auto, you're welcome to share you edit

Edit: Given it a tweak, what do you think? I removed some posts, shifted the boat over (I thought it was a bit close to the pole in the original), added some sharpening and dodge/burned a little

You can post in SYS but then you cant asked for feedback.
We do ask that you post your exif information so, perhaps we could point out alternate camera settings for you. Also, try and look at your photo closer, tell us what you may like or dont like, perhaps a bit on what you might want help with. Having issues composing or settings? Folks are more likely to help you if you put some effort in your posts. (just a hint)
More information on your photo is better. Helps you learn and helps us to help you better

Here it is Jamie..as I mentioned above, a curves adjustment layer to bump up the contrast slightly and a re-crop and cloning to remove all the pilings to the right of the lineup of pilings leading to the boat.
