Default B&W landscape help

Hello everybody,

I'm new in photography as i recently bought Fuji s9500 and I'm really fascinated with B&W photos. I'm extensively experimenting with B&W shots and I have some idea about indoor photos, but I'm not sure if I'm going to the right direction with outdoor and landscape photos...

Here is one and any suggestion would be really great...

Overall, it's pretty dark, almost like you took it fairly late in the evening and this was the best you could do handholding.

I'm not a big fan of the thru-the-fence effect, but I know you didn't ask about composition.

Using a larger aperture such as f/1.8 and setting a focus point on the airplane itself would have almost if not completely elliiminated that fence from the picture. Although much of the rest of the picture would not have been in focus either. It's always a crap shoot until you gain the experience of what your lenses will do.
