Having a difficult time keeping the foreground light (in this case the tree on the left) and when I get the tree looking like a tree, the sky is washed out............any suggestions for a person that wants to learn?

Probably the first lesson all photogs learn: Sunlight and shadows don't play nicely on a digital sensor. This can be taken care of a few different ways. One is to take the shot with the sunlight to your back (ideally with the sun low-ish on the horizon). The other is to take two different exposures, one for the sky and one for the tree, and blend the two in photoshop, GIMP, etc...

Thanks for the quick feedback, I guess it was an impossible shot to do all at once, especially from this angle.................I'm still learning the pp thing as well

Hard shot to try to make.
Did you try with a couple flash settings on just to try to light up the tree a bit?
