Does this image do anything for anyone? I fear not. It seems ... a bit flat.

What did I do wrong in terms of exposure? Could I have done more PP? In this verison, I adjusted white balance, applied auto tone with a couple tweaks, reduced the exposure (after applying auto tone, it was way over-exposed), and for the first time, I used the brush tool to up the exposure on the brick ceiling so that it stood out more.

Or is my exposure okay and my subject just blows? I don't feel that's the case. I can't help but think that a good photographer could get a really nice shot here.

Pentax K-X

ISO 200

aperture 8.0
no flash

Thanks in advance for your critique.

For me, this image isn't about color but texture. I'd convert it to black and white. You can use the color mixer in Photoshop or the B&W luminance module in Lightroom to adjust the brightness of different colors.

Pumping up the reds and oranges brings out the ceiling details. Pushing the blues and purples adds a cool glow to the light coming in the middle. From there, you can adjust the contrast, brightness, and clarity to emphasize the textures of the location.

An example, which I'll remove if you want.

Wow boomer, you're totally right. I actually toyed with a conversion before posting because as you said, it's all about the textures. I've just never done one before. That conversion is amazing.

If anyone has a link to a good tutoriol for converting to B&W using lightroom, I'd appreciate it. I know there is one on this very site, but after finding it once, I haven't been able to locate it again.

Thanks Boomer, you've inspired me to learn to convert to B&W.

LOVE this shot in BW. The conversion makes such a difference. It's got me thinking about textures now

I also think it would be more interesting with a different angle ... try blocking out the right side with the sign with your hand -- I think it looks more interesting ... it's too head-on for me ...
