Default Belltower to Heaven

I was at the Taste of the Danforth festival in Toronto today, and I was really drawn by these clouds over this tower. Problem is there was about 250,000 people milling around and there is no real other way I could compose it. I have never shot half a building before and it bugs me. Does it work as it sits, would you crop it differently, or does the half a building bug you too?

I like the shot, but you're right: the half a building doesn't look quite right. I think(just my humble opinion), if you can't get the whole building, you could just leave the belltower touching the sky.

It is a nice subject and I agree with you about the half building theory.

Was it possible to get a picture of just the doorway looking up in a vertical shot? That may have been what you needed. There's a lot of detail on the front of this building that would have made a great shot in itself. This building could also be a great candidate for HDR processing with all that detail.

Nope.... This, was the streets:

Unfortunately, there was not other shot or angle to be had..

You are right it is a great building, I will have to go back some day and try to get it in it's full glory... it's unfortunate, because I was groovin on the clouds.

The one idea I have played with to maybe save this image is to go with a really crazy crop. I'm not sure if this works for me or not, but I think it is better than half a building. That just looks like crappy photography, this looks intentional.

I would edit it more like this.

Part of the idea is it towering into the sky so a closer viewpoint would have been better I think. To move it a little that way I tilted it a little with lens correction, but I think the crop minimizes the effect.

Yeah Steve, that's similar to the other crop I had done, and I was torn between the two, but I think I am going to go with the one you are suggesting.

Agreed - the vertically cropped version is a really nice image.
