Default Stormy day photo

Greetings,

This is my first photo to submit for your critique. Any suggestions on what I should or should not have done in this photo?

This was a cloudy day, but the photo was taken just off to the left of the sun.

Thanks,

Tony

Can you give us your exif (camera settings)? Knowing that can help in perhaps offering alternate settings of your camera for you. txs

I thought I did that. My Camera is a Canon G-12 and I was in Shuttle speed priority with Auto white balance. This with what I had already included is all I know to send.

Thanks,

Tony

Welcome to DPS. I think you've captured the drama of the sky, but I don't think the plants in the foreground are helping and the image could use a focal point. I don't know if you included the plants to frame the shot, but I think they are too intrusive. I think a boat in the water or something like that could act as a focal point and give the viewer's eye something to rest on. I'm curious why you chose shutter priority and f/5.6. Usually, in landscapes, you want a lot of depth of field. I would have used aperture priority and f/8 or f/11. One final thing - I would level the horizon.

Thanks for your comments.

I used several settings on the camera just to see which one would do the best. This one seemed to have what I was looking for. Also, I used 5.6 because that is the closest to the optimal aperture for the G-12. (5.0) I have since taken more photos under different conditions and have used my max aperture of 8.0. And I did re-position to take the plants out of the picture.
Thanks for the suggestion of a focal point, that is something that I need to remember.

Thanks again,

Tony
