Default Town Clock

I took this shot using the following equipment/settings.

Nikon D90
Tamrom 18-270
ISO 200
42 mm 1/500 @4.2

My concern is composition. I chose to place the clock 1/3rd into the left part of the image and use the trees as a leading line that disappears out of frame.

I could have went more wide angle, from the same position, and included a line of one story business buildings down the right side of the frame on the other side of the sidewalk.

Critics on this or any other aspect of the photo are welcome.

I think a little more contrast and having the clock more in-focus, would make it a nicer shot. Just my 2 cents, though.

+1 and I think you went a little overboard tone mapping

Thanks for your input.

I'm not certain their is a problem with the focus, but rather my efforts to regain detail in the "blown out" sky made things fuzzy.

I have attached a jpg made from the original "un touched" raw file. That clock has been here for 103 years, with a little guidance and practice I think I can get a great shot of it.

I think even the original seem to be little fuzzy on the clock details. You guys seeing the same thing? May be my eyes ????

1. How about attempting early in the morning or just at sun set for better lighting.

2. Focus the clock face then recompose your shot.

3. Use a tripod or even a mono pod.

I agree about the focus of the clock-face, but that aside and early morning/late afternoon light would definately be better.

Your question was however about composition, so here's my 2c worth:

1. I absolutely prefer the lines in your original shot. In your cropped version, the "leading lines" just leads you right out of the picture. I would however include the entire branch hanging over the road.
2. In the original, I would also have stood a little closer to the clock, positioning the foot a little closer to the bottom. That way, you would probably get rid of the "thing" in the top right corner. If not, clone it out.
