Hi there,
Have just purchased a Nikon D5000 and am new to the world of DSLR and this is one of my first shots using a beach scene setting. Can you please give me your opinions as to what I could have done to improve the photo Cheers Patricia Sorry just noticed date and time are wrong ..... oop's

i think its a great picture. You should try it also as a sunrise and sunset capture, the lighting will make it more dramatic. I would also try a night long exposure there, the water motion and the lights for the houses and streets would make an awesome setting.

Wasn't sure about cropping but I do see what you mean Doug, I will go back to the same spot and see what I come up with next time. Thank you for your constructive critique.

As mentioned before, try shooting at different times in the day...perhaps during the golden hour and through twilight. The composition looks good, I like the photo a lot, but it looks like this was shot in mid afternoon with harsh light. The reason I think that is because it looks like the white part of the ocean water is blown out (too bright), and parts of your shot are in deep shadows.
