Default Lunar eclipse

Hi all

I was out trying to take shots of the lunar eclipse tonight. Was freezing standing out there in the SA winter. I had several issues with this shoot - the main one being that by the time I got to this shot, I had discarded the tripod, because for some reason - it just wouldn't keep still. In this shot I was doing it handheld.

Anyway - I had to start lifting the ISO, and I was wondering if there could have been another way I could capture the red colouring of an eclipsed moon at a lower ISO (without a tripod), because I am really happy with this shot aside from the grain. Otherwise is there a way I can fix the grain?

EXIF data:
Camera: Canon 550D
Lens: Tamron 18 - 270mm
Focal Length: 270mm
ISO: 1600
F number: 6.3
Exposure: 1/10

I agree the without a tripod is impressive. Most people that I've read that have posted about shooting the moon talk about really underexposing the moon and then lightening in post processing. That way you retain the details of the moon and don't blow it out at all.

I think you noted the key to improving the shot - lower the ISO and use the tripod. Just my 2 cents, but when shooting any long exposures a tripod is a must if ur going to keep the ISO down.

The red ash looks good Blueash
I can't see the grain in this resized shot, but for handheld, you did a great job. Using a tripod, you need a remote as the distance to the subject amplifies the smallest vibration.
