Default Summit Road, New Zealand

Hi all,

This is a shot I took at christmas while camping but have only just edited it. Anyway, was wondering about the composition and colour. The crop or lack of it, is straight from the camera. It's an HDR, not sure if that's obvious. It certainly isn't meant to be. I didn't use a tripod so sharpened it a bit in CS5.

Summit road, Banks Peninsula, Canterbury, New Zealand

Exif data
Camera Canon EOS 500D
Exposure 0.003 sec (1/320)
Aperture f/5.0
Focal Length 40 mm
ISO Speed 250

Well, for HDR photograph I think you've done the processing just right - it is obvious, just so or otherwise not much point doing it in HDR

I think the composition is fine - I can't really find anything to criticise Bob. Nice work and lovely shot.

I think the HDR was well done, not overprocessed at all.

I like this shot. I don't think it is overcooked. I just have a couple of minor criticisms. First, the road on the left leads me out of the frame, but at least it is not obvious. Secondly, I think it could use more of a focal point, like a motorcycle/bicycle on the road. I still think it is a good shot overall.

That was hand held HDR?

Wasn't the point of HDR capturing whole dynamic range first, and then the overcooked look came into fashion?

Bob, I also think you have a very nice photo here. One minor remark on composition, as Krusty said, is the road leading away from the rocks and out of the frame. I find the rocks to be the most dominant element and the road would be better if it led to it. But you can't control that, and I think you utilized what you had well here. It does have a slight HDR look, but not too much. Other than that, I find the green colour too saturated/too vibrant. Nice shot!

Er- yes. If it's not obvious then what is the point of HDR - cooked or overcooked?

For me, it's presenting the whole dynamic range in a single photo, but, to be honest, that rarely comes without the overcooked look.
