I hope you wanted to write that you are learning to use your camera.

About your photo: I see you have very interesting coastal landscapes there in Trinidad. You will be able to use them effectively as soon as you learn some basic things.

For the beginning I would like to point out just a couple of things to you: do you notice how the horizon in your photo is leaning? You generally always want to avoid that, and you do that while taking the photo. Prior to pressing the shutter button, look at your horizon and rotate the camera if necessary to make it level. Second, while framing your shot, try not to cut off your subjects (I think the big tree and the rocks are your subjects here) and keep an eye on small things protruding into your frame, like the branch in upper left corner. These things are distracting and they don't help your photos. Also, if you try shooting later in the afternoon and early in the morning (around sunrise and sunset) you'll find that your photos have much prettier colours and overall quality. Keep shooting and post photos here for critique.

Thanks milosh,

You are correct.. just a typo.. I meant to say I am "now" learning to use my new camera.

Thank for the tips.. I did not really think of the horizon before.. I will keep it in mind.

Welcome to DPS. That's a decent shot for a beginner. I would pay attention to what milosh says. I also noticed your image is not really sharp. Did you take it hand held? You're going to want to get a good tripod eventually if you get serious about photography. Shooting in the middle of the day produces the harshest light and your landscape pictures will improve if you shoot in the golden hours.

Here is another shot which might be a bit better taking some comments into consideration ... I got the full tree in the shot, and the horizon is closer to horizontal. Do you think this is an improvement? The security light however bothers me.. Also still not too sharp.. is a tripod the answer to this?

55mm at 1/200 should be just fine, although I'd think you could shoot it a bit faster given the lighting. The lack of sharpness you're seeing could simply be do to the way you're resizing it to post on the forum --does the full size photo look sharp? Also, if you're shooting RAW (I'm assuming not, given you're just learning your camera, but just in case) you'll want to sharpen the photo either in Lightroom, Photoshop, or whatever image editing software you're using.

Beautiful location, by the way.
