I think the black background like the one michael used takes away the snapshot feel and gives it a much more artistic feel. However, he was able to take his shot in a controlled environment while you probably did not have that option.

Definitely a controlled environment for mine. I had picked up some clamp lights and some daylight rated fluorescent bulbs at Home Depot. Wanted to see what I could do with them in a table top setup.
