Default Composition & Colours

Hi,

Can I please get some feedback with the composition and colours of this photo? I don't take many landscape photos so I'm generally not aware of things to keep/remove etc.

Huntly Power Station

Edit: I remembered I forgot to post the EXIF as I was driving to work

and also the building is Unknown! i mean i cant tell if it is a house or a factory! So i would suggest either trying another subject. Or to try looking for better Angle.

Those are some very nice sunset colors, but if you're going to use a silhouette, you should use an object that the viewer can identify more easily. A single tree works great in most cases. Unfortunately, a building with no distinguishable features doesn't work so well.

Your other option is to try to get the sky and building exposed, but since the building is so much darker, you're going to have to use a graduated ND filter, exposure blending or HDR to overcome the dynamic range issue.

My naiveity in assuming everyone has been to New Zealand! I guess if you haven't been to New Zealand then you wouldn't recognise the building. It's Huntly Power Station which you see when driving between Auckland and Hamilton.

I will play with some of the other exposures and use exposure blending to bring out some of the details on the building. I'm not so good with the HDR feature in photoshop.

Wow, the colors are terrific and would make a terrific backdrop for most any silhouette...provided that silhouette is somewhat interesting. To someone from your area of NZ, this may be very meaningful, but here on the other side of the world, not so much. That means that if you want to make more powerful images you are going to need to look for shapes with more universal appeal. (churches maybe, or ruins) Or find shapes that have more compositional impact.

It looks like you could have had a nice reflection of the silhouette here if you move back a bit or zoomed out a little. This would have added a lot of interest and it wouldn't really matter about the shape.

I love the sky!

Perhaps as benchdog mentioned, moving back or zooming out such that you get more of the sky and a complete reflection of the silhouette would be better, since the emphasis is on the sky and there's currently too much black from an unrecognizable silhouette (to the rest of us who don't hail from the same region as you).
