Next time, after you take a photo, check the histogram on your camera (read more on histograms here: Understanding Histograms),
Make sure that photo's histogram data does not touch the right edge of histogram (if it does, it means that you have blown out areas, like the flower in this one). If you do have blown out areas, you need to decrease your exposure. |

In this particular case, where you have something small and easily in reach that's been blown out because it's in direct sunshine, I would get a sheet of tracing paper or something else white and opaque, and place it between the flower and the sun.. This will cast a slight shadow on the flower, bringing down its brightness and hopefully allowing you to take the photo without blowing the highlights. This is basically the equivalent of making a softbox.
Milosh's method is the preferred method, but it will make the whole of the photograph darker, but my way you won't have to do so much post processing. Of course it won't work for larger or further away objects.
