I shot this in Madikere, India during a spring break trip. Any suggestions/critiques would be appreciated!

@windrider86: I usually photograph landscapes, although I have been trying to get into photographing people as well. The biggest thing I would like help with/suggestions on is exposure and lighting; sometimes my pictures come out great, sometimes the backgrounds (especially the sky) are all blown out and just look like a big white space.

I shot this picture with a Nikon D5000. ISO 400. Shutter speed 1/160. Fstop f/6.30. Focal length in 35mm=82. Focal length 55mm. No flash.

Hope this helps.

Welcome to DPS. This is a nice scene, but the sun reflections off the water are blown out. If you got a circular polarizer, you should be able to position yourself to eliminate most of the glare.

If you are getting a lot of blown out skies in your landscape shots you should stop shooting in the middle of the day and shoot in the golden hours instead. Getting a graduated neutral density filter will help also. Also, a tripod, of course.

Re controlling the exposure.

If you can't shoot at a better time in the day or in better lighting or a polariser is not working, try shooting multiple different exposures (your camera will need to be stationary), preferably in RAW (to give you more control when PPing) and merge the images when post processing.

Thanks for the tips. I recently purchased a new lens, and was given a polarizing filter to go with it. However, this was after the posted picture.

@Krusty79: I have heard this before. However, that was not really an option for this shot since I was on a schedule.

@RichardTaylor: I have shot in RAW before (mostly portraits) but haven't tried multiple exposures for the same shot.
