In particular, I'm interested to hear thoughts on composition, colour and exposure.

That's a nice beach scene there. I think the colors could use a little "pop," maybe with a levels or curves adjustment. I'm not quite sure what the subject of the image is, but there is a lot of interesting detail in the foreground to look at.
