Default Sunset at Hayward shoreline

Okay, no more dark, featureless subjects. This shot has a more conventional subject. We had a spectacular sunset that night. This was not the most spectacular shot of the set, but I think this had the best composition. So, my questions for the jury are:

1. Do you like it?
2. How does the composition work for you? How about the flow?

After I uploaded this to Flickr, I read you're supposed to sharpen the image after resizing (d'oh!), so it may be a little soft.

f/11
30 seconds
.6 Lee ND grad
ASA 100
21mm focal length

Thanks for looking.

I like the colors and the composition. The only thing I would do is crop some off of the bottom and a little off of the right side. For me there is a lot of wasted space in those 2 areas.

While Dave has a valid argument, I am going in the opposite direction with this one. First off, I think those areas need to be there to balance the photograph tonally. Secondly, I love the composition. It just screams vista to me. I don't have a gripe with the softness because my eye says twilight photographs need to be less sharp to seem realistic. Nice work. Jim

I agree with Jim on this. I like it a lot. Great shot!

Well done

@dvtldav - I have actually cropped this image already. I think I stopped cropping any more from the bottom because I didn't want to put the horizon right in the middle of the shot. But I see your suggestion would bring more emphasis to the colors in the sky. Thanks for the comment.

@jim - Thank you for the nice comments. I hadn't considered the sharpness/twilight factor, but I'll keep that in mind. I did try to keep everything nicely proportioned when I cropped the image.

@benchdog - Thanks for the positive feedback!

I wouldn't recommend any additional cropping, it seems nicely balanced as is. I would recommend sharpening a bit, with a close eye on the foreground (so as not to over sharpen).

Everything else is pretty sweet, wouldn't having one like this in my own collection.

Thanks LenDog. I am now aware of the need to sharpen an image after resizing, so I'll keep that in mind in the future.
