Default My first post for C&C

I have just started in this adventure. I really don't know what I am doing, but want to learn all I can. I hope I am not to much of an old dog to learn a new trick.

Garden Steps

As I said I am a newbie and I thought the info would upload with the pic. Live and learn.

Canon PowerShot G12
1/640
F4.0
ISO 200

As far as a question ...I don't really know enough to ask a question.

You might want to take a look at the forum rules, and then edit your information. I'll have some things to say after you get that much done.

In landscape photography, when you shoot is more important than where you shoot.

You've got a couple of different possible subjects in your shot, but I'm not clear on what you wanted the viewers to focus on. I have attached a link to a document that will hopefully help you to compose your shots.

Also, we usually recommend shooting in the golden hours for landscapes because the midday lighting is harsh and produces shadows.

If you don't have a circular polarizer yet, you're going to want one.

Thanks Krusty79 for the link. I see what you mean by having " a couple of different possible subjects in your shot, but I'm not clear on what you wanted the viewers to focus on." I have another shot of the same area that I think may be a little more "focused" on a subject. If you have time you can see it at Flickr: usetobe's Photostream It is titled Garden Steps II.

Are you speaking of the shadows from the flowers?

Again thanks for the link.

Your other shot is better defined. You have the plants in the foreground, the steps as your subject in the midground and more plants in the background. The fence at the top is a little distracting, but you're on the right track. The challenge for you now is to find more compelling subjects.

In my comment on the midday lighting, that applies to anything you shoot in midday. You are probably going to get some harsh shadows, no matter what you shoot. However, if you shoot in the golden hours, you're probably going to need a tripod, which every photographer should have anyways.

Here's a short article on composition you might like - http://www.livermorevalleycameraclub...omposition.pdf
