Default Sailing over the Rhine river valley...

Hi all, having a boat tour over the Rhine river in Germany

The Rhine (Dutch: Rijn; French: Rhin; German: Rhein; Italian: Reno; Latin: Rhenus; Romansh: Rain) flows from Graubünden in the eastern Swiss Alps to the North Sea coast in the Netherlands and is one of the longest and most important rivers in Europe, at about 1,233 km (766 mi),[2][3] with an average discharge of more than 2,000 m3/s (71,000 cu ft/s).

The Rhine and the Danube formed most of the northern inland frontier of the Roman Empire and, since those days, the Rhine has been a vital and navigable waterway carrying trade and goods deep inland. It has also served as a defensive feature and has been the basis for regional and international borders. The many castles and prehistoric fortifications along the Rhine testify to its importance as a waterway. River traffic could be stopped at these locations, usually for the purpose of collecting tolls, by the state that controlled that portion of the river.

Can you please critic composition? hand held pic, cloudly at 4:00pm around

Thanks Art

Technical.
It appears to be a bit "flat" to me with the land segment being under exposed. I wonder how it would look with some PPing to give that area. some "pop".

Aesthetic.
To me all that water in the foreground doesn't help the photograph at all.
How does it look with most of the water cropped out?

It's a bit difficult to critique thumbnails as I can't see them while writing.

But my initial reaction is.. It's very dark, no detail in the trees, there's too much water, the subject matter isn't clear.. Whether you were trying to show the hidden church or the trees and their colours?

Sorry, I don't wish to be discouraging, but there really isn't much to go on in this photo. It's ok, but it looks very much like a snapshot.. By that I mean a quickly taken photograph taken to record your trip, not taken with the intention to capture a planned photo with a subject and composition in mind.

I'm not sure what's the weather like in Germany, but it looks just like ours, cloudy and raining, and cold!!

Again, like Jon said, the subject matter is a bit unclear. If I were you, I would try to bring the trees and the church closer (zoom in) and (after cropping) leave only a small amount of water below the trees. Even a small line of water is enough to show that the trees are on a river bank, but this much water doesn't do any good to composition, it just pushes the church further back. Here's a quick crop and edit, just so you can see my point about the comp. more clearly.

Ahhh.. you see.. You were on the wrong river.. If you'd gone down the Rhone, then you'd have met up with this hot, dry and sunny weather we've been having here in Switzerland!

Not sure about your comment, what other river are you talking about?
