Default tripod needed?

harbor lights

Canon EOS 500D
Exposure 1.6
Aperture f/11.0
Focal Length 55 mm
ISO Speed 1600
Exposure Bias 0 EV
Flash Off, Did not fire

I like the reflections on the water, but is the camera shake so evident? Any comment on composition and settings are welcome. I've been learning how to take pics without the flash in the evening so that colors would be more vivid. Please critique and any pointers would be helpful. thanks.

The short answer is yes. A rule of thumb is that hand held shots should be 1/focal length so 1/60th should be the minimum shutter speed. It's really a pretty good hand held shot for such a slow shutter speed in my opinion. If I would have taken it, it would have looked like tracer fire. However, compared to similar shots, it is quite blurred.

Sorry, the eyes are a little heavy. I looked at exposure and read shutter...my apologies.

Yeah, if you have to go to ISO 1600 for landscape stuff, then you need a tripod. It's near impossible to hand hold a camera for this long and have it come out well. Get the tripod. use ISO 100, and thank me in the morning.
